What is Bowen Therapy
Bowen is a natural therapy offering a non-invasive, holistic approach to pain relief and healing. Bowen Therapy recognises the underlying cause of many musculoskeletal, Neurological and other Health problems or pain can be found in the soft tissue or fascia. The facia is the connective fibrous tissues that run throughout the body and surround and protect the muscles.
This remarkable therapy uses gentle soft-tissue or fascial release techniques on specific spots on the body. Forceful manipulation is not used. Instead, Bowen therapy involves a light cross fibre manoeuvring of the muscle or tendon. This works to stimulate the body’s energy and activate it’s healing capacity. This gives the brain a message to heal a particular area and achieve balance and lasting relief.
The Benefits of Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is able to treat a range of acute and chronic conditions and is particularly beneficial for those seeking assistance with mobility issues, physiology, pain relief, stress relief, and general wellbeing. The main benefit of Bowen Therapy, lies in the long term and permanent relief that can be experienced.
Injury Management
Because Bowen works with muscles, nerves, fascia and consequently bones, this bodywork can have a profound effect on a body that has been injured, both recently and historically. It can set the body’s own healing ability to begin when Bowen is administered. On occasion pain can immediately reduce or disappear or it can have the same effect over time. Bowen can calm the body’s “fight and flight” response to injury so healing can begin to take place.
A Brief History of Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy was developed by Tom Bowen, (1916-1982), a quiet unassuming man from Geelong, New South Wales, Australia. After years of clinical work and much study of other modalities he developed a unique set of specific moves associated with different sequences and timing intervals. The moves provided fascial release and integration stimulating a variety of anatomical or physiological responses frequently resulting in long term and often immediate resolution of the majority of presenting problems and pain conditions
In 1975 the Australian government instituted Webb Committee of Inquiry into Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Naturopathy in Australia reviewed Tom Bowen’s work. They found he was seeing some 13,000 people a year and achieving a success rate in his practice of over 80% of presenting conditions. From its Australian origins his innovative and unique technique has now been adopted worldwide with practitioners in countries including New Zealand, USA, Canada, United Kingdom and European Union members, parts of Asia and the South Pacific and still growing.
The Bowen Technique was introduced to the world thanks to the incredible efforts of Oswald and Elaine Rentsch who learnt directly from and painstakingly documented Tom Bowen's work and established the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in the late 1980's. www.bowtech.com Both Ossie and Elaine still travel the world teaching this amazing therapy. Their dedication to Bowen Therapy is immense and we can’t thank them enough for passing on to us, Tom’s knowledge and his great work. It truly is, using Tom’s words, a “Gift from God.”
